In Dublin’s Fair City

We started the day right, with fresh Tim Hortons coffee. We had another glorious sunny day in Dublin – amazing  23C – too hot for Dubliners!  We were not complaining. We joined the Dublin City Hop-on Hop-off tour (red then yellow route). Once again so much history and more sites than could be visited. After a complete cycle of the route, had lunch in a traditional Dublin pub, Brannigan’s, for soup and sandwiches.

Hopped back on the tour and visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Christ Church and St Audoen’s Church.

Hopped on to get to the Kilmainham Gaol (prison) - opened in 1796 and where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising (rebellion) were executed. This was a big deal in Ireland – those executions sparked the fire that lead to the creation of the Irish Free State now known as the Republic of Ireland.  What a moving experience to be within the walls of Kilmainham Gaol.

We had a lovely dinner at The Parnell – named for one of the most influential Dubliners in the political history of Ireland. Finished our day with a night-time bus tour of Dublin. Off to England via Wales on the ferry tomorrow.  What an amazing time we had in Dublin’s Fair City. However, as Doughty said, endings lead to beginnings.

More to follow …
